Introduction / background

Larry and Linda Sackmann as well as Clayton and Teresa McDonald are the owners of University Mercantile, this is some of our background and passion:

Larry & Linda Sackmann – Both retired. Larry, General Contractor and cabinet maker and owner of Spokane Glass and Ritzville Glass. Linda worked in the business office for a medical laboratory in Spokane for 49 years.

Clayton & Teresa McDonald – Owners of C & T New Again Sales. Clayton is a creator/fabricator by trade with a passion in wood work. Teresa worked 20 years in management for a local company. Both love to attend auctions, estate sales and antique markets.

Why open a shop?

(Larry) Long time dream to have a really good location to sell my restored and custom pieces. With a large array of tools, equipment, and know how to restore or repurpose antiques and other items, I am now in a position that will allow me to fulfill this dream.

(Linda) Loves the hunt for antiques and unique items and also enjoys visiting with the people and hearing the stories that go with the individual pieces that we buy.

(Clayton and Teresa) C & T New Again Sales (previous, now closed shop) was a dream of supporting our family as well as giving back to a great community that has given to us. We both love the customer interaction as well and learning different ways we can help the community. Last year we sponsored a basketball camp as well as two of the girls on the team who needed the financial support to be able to attend the leadership skill camps offered by the organization. We donated coats, gloves, hats, socks and shoes to the homeless as well as attended functions that furthered their achievements to get back off the streets. Only a few months after opening C & T New Again Sales we had over grown our space, which is when Larry (whom we already did business with)approached us to open as partners.

What do you like about location and shop?

Our store is located just west of the International District, (Sprague and Helena). This is on the East edge of the University District, Hence the name University Mercantile. This area of Sprague is scheduled to get a facelift over the next two years. This overhaul, will open the door for many more new businesses in the near future.

Our building is 110 years old (1906), and has the look and nostalgia that will complement our products. To learn more about historic buildings along east Sprague and in the East Central Neighborhood visit the Spokane Historic Preservation website and read the, “East Central Architectural Survey and Inventory”.
